There are five regions where one or more languages, besides Italian, is either officially recognised or given some degree of legal acceptance. Three of these are in border regions, regions which have changed hands several times, forcing the local population, already ethnically distinct, to become bilingual.

Other regions also have bilingual pockets, but have had no special recognition over the years.
