Introduction
In order to understand fully a language it is not only necessary to
understand the people in the street, but it is also good to understand
the culture of the country where the language is spoken. It is always
the writers who determine the course the language will take, though they
too, follow the tendencies of the times, discarding some things and making
others permanent.
Italian was in no way different and it was the fact that three great
writers were born in Tuscany during the period when the language was
evolving which determined that the standard language would henceforth
be the language they had used: Tuscan.
